Smith’s Landing First Nation goes to the polls today

It’s election day for members of the Smith’s Landing First Nation. The Denesuline community is located near the NWT Alberta border and Wood Buffalo National Park. It was a historic stop during the fur trade era along the Slave River, North of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta.

Two candidates are running for chief of the tight nit community, Wilfred Paulette and former chief Gerry Cheezie.

Eight candidates are running for the four seats on council.

Geronimo Paulette, Thaidene Paulette, and Fred Daniels are seeking re-election, along with candidates Diane Benwell, Miranda Norn, Delphine Paulette-Clarke, Eileen Tourangeau and Tony Vermillion.

Polls are open between 9 and 6pm today at the Roaring Rapids Hall in Fort Smith, and at the Chateau Louis in Edmonton.
