Come share your thoughts on the carbon tax

If you want to have your say on how the N.W.T. should put a price on carbon, then show up Thursday evening at the Legislative Assembly.

The Standing Committee on Government Operations is hosting a public meeting for feedback on the proposed carbon tax. The meeting comes a couple of weeks after the committee criticized the department of finance for not giving more details on its carbon pricing plan. In the mean time, it called on residents to write in with questions and concerns.

Committee chair Kieron Testart said in an email it has gotten a number of submissions so far and is currently reviewing them.

“The fundamental question before committee at this time is what are the merits and drawbacks of each of the proposed carbon pricing schemes (GNWT vs. Federal) and which plan has the best results for reducing emissions and limiting the costs to Northern households and businesses,” he added.

The carbon tax was supposed to kick in on July 1 but the government had to request a delay because of a legislative backlog.

That hasn’t stopped Premier McLeod from rubbing shoulders with provincial premiers opposing the carbon tax.

The public meeting is Thursday at 7 p.m. in Committee Room ‘A’ on the second floor of the Legislative Assembly.
