Ceremony at Leg Tuesday for latest NWT Order recipients Joe McBryan, Lyda Fuller

Hay River’s “Buffalo” Joe McBryan and tireless women’s advocate Lyda Fuller have been named as this year’s recipients of the Order of the Northwest Territories.

It is the highest honour the NWT bestows upon citizens.

It was established six years ago,  and “recognizes individuals who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the NWT.”

In a news release the council of the order says “Both Mr McBryan and Mrs Fuller inspire northerners to expand our horizons and give back to our communities.”

Mrs. Fuller was nominated for her work in public service.

She is the Yellowknife-based executive director of the YWCA NWT and is an advocate for services and programs that increase the safety for women and families throughout the north.

McBryan is probably best known for his TV role as the sometimes crusty operator of Buffalo Airways on the reality show Ice Pilots NWT.

The series was broadcast on History Television for six seasons from 2009 to 2014.

Off camera however McBryan’s generosity has helped families in need, provided sports teams and schools discounted fares, and assisted Elders when they were short on airfare, according to the news release.

An induction ceremony for Fuller and McBryan will take place at the Legislative Assembly at 11am on Tuesday, August 20.
