NWT premier says he’s still undecided on whether he will seek re-election this fall

The premier of the Northwest Territories says he’s still undecided on whether he will seek re-election in this fall’s territorial election.

Bob McLeod made the comment while answering a question from a reporter this week following a meeting in Yellowknife of the Intergovernmental Council – a group made up of representatives of the Government of the NWT as well as several Indigenous governments from across the territory.

Born in 1952, McLeod, who was raised in Fort Providence, is the 12th premier of the NWT and is winding down his unprecedented second term as premier.

He oversaw the Devolution Agreement with the federal government in 2014 which saw the territory acquire province-like powers over its land, water and resources.

His brother, Michael McLeod, was also a member of the NWT Legislative assembly from 1999 to 2011.

He is, of course, the current NWT Member of Parliament.

At least two current MLAs have said they are seeking re-election – Shane Thompson in Nehendeh and Kevin O’Reilly in Yellowknife’s Frame Lake riding.

Tom Beaulieu, the current MLA for Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh, says he will not be running in the October election.
