Fort McPherson man sentenced to just under three years in jail for fatally beating his cousin

A man from the Mackenzie Delta community of Fort McPherson has been sentenced to just under three years in jail after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his cousin.

Darcy Nerysoo, 31, who was initially charged with second-degree murder, received his punishment last week in court in Fort McPherson after he pleaded guilty to the charge in April.

Court heard that Nerysoo and his cousin Davey Stewart were drinking heavily in the community last June when they got into an physical altercation.

According to an agreed statement of facts, Nerysoo punched Stewart in the face and stomped on his torso, court heard.

It was an emotional day in court as a number of victim impact statements were read including one from Stewart’s father.

Nerysoo will also be on three years probation after his release and must provide a sample of his DNA for the national registry.

Nerysoo has been in custody since being arrested shortly after Stewart’s death.

Taking into account his pre-trial custody, Nerysoo will have about 18 months left to serve.
