Body of missing teenager found in Yellowknife

Yellowknife RCMP have confirmed the heartbreaking news that a body found near Frame Lake Tuesday morning is that of a missing 15-year old girl.

Police stated in a news release that the deceased person has been identified as Cassidy Giroux of Yellowknife.

Mounties say that her body was found about 9:15 Tuesday morning just off the Frame Lake Trail between Matonabee Street and Albatross Court.

Constable Heather Cosenzo of Yellowknife RCMP says that at this time no criminality is suspected in her death.

She adds that an autopsy will be done to try to determine the cause of death.

Police and the NWT Coroner’s office are investigating.

Mounties had earlier stated that Cassidy had been reported missing on Monday by her family after she hadn’t been seen since Friday.

Cassidy was a Grade 10 student at St. Patrick’s High School.

This was her first year at the school having recently moved to Yellowknife from Fort Smith.

Superintendent Claudia Parker from Yellowknife Catholic Schools says the school board is helping students who are struggling with the devastating news.

“Our crisis response team has met and put a plan in place. Students gathered together at the end of the day and were advised of Cassidy’s death. Everybody had prayer together. Counsellors are available. We look to bring closure for the students and celebrate Cassidy’s life,” Parker said. “We have a quiet room set up where students can gather. Staff have been told that if they see a student struggling they are to contact administration so that a counsellor can seek them out. We have told our students to make sure they take care of themselves, but we are here to help them. ”

Ground Search and Rescue, as well as Civilian Air Search and Rescue (CASARA) had been involved in the ground and air search for Cassidy since Monday night.

The thoughts of CKLB and the RCMP are with Cassidy’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone else affected during this extremely difficult time.

Call RCMP or Crime Stoppers if you can help in the investigation.
