Youth from across NWT communities in Yellowknife for 21st annual NWT Skills competition

Young people from communities across the NWT are converging on Yellowknife for the 21st Annual Territorial Competition and Career Expo.

The opening ceremony is Thursday night at 7:00 at the Yellowknife Multiplex with the competition itself taking place Friday.

The Skills Canada NWT Territorial Competition is an Olympic style event in which secondary and post-secondary students, as well as apprentices from across the Northwest Territories will compete in their chosen skill category.

There are more than 20 different skill categories this year, including Graphic Design Technology, Welding, Hairstyling, Public Speaking and Cabinetmaking.

Local businesses, organizations and educational institutions are also hosting about 30 exhibitor booths and will be offering fun, hands-on activities.

The competition runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday at the Multiplex, in both the Ed Jeske and Shorty Brown Arenas.

It’s free to get in.

The award ceremony and medal presentations will be held Friday from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Explorer Hotel.
