The Native Communications Society of the Northwest Territories (NCS)

Founded in 1982, NCS has grown to provide radio and TV broadcasting, delivering Aboriginal language services to 33 communities, three diamond mines, and regions in Alberta and Nunavut. With a dedicated staff of 20 and a seasoned Board, NCS has faced and overcome significant financial and administrative challenges.

Under new leadership, NCS is now experiencing rapid growth, successfully expanding programs while maintaining fiscal responsibility to funders and Revenue Canada.

NCS as the Parent Organization

The Native Communications Society (NCS) serves as the overarching entity that manages multiple companies and projects. One of its key subsidiaries is CKLB Radio, which owns transmission equipment and broadcasts to 33 territorial communities, as well as to the Diavik and De Beers Snap Lake diamond mines, and the BHP Ekati Mine.

CKLB also provides broadcasting to four northern Alberta communities, which use their own equipment outside NCS jurisdiction, and one Nunavut community that manages its own broadcasting and maintenance.

Programming is delivered in English and Aboriginal languages, focusing on Indigenous issues, cultures, and lifestyles, including a diverse range of music, regional news, and special broadcasts. Online streaming is available via the NCS website, reaching a global audience.
