CKLB has an immediate opening for a full-time Digital Media Journalist with a desire to learn about northern Indigenous issues while experiencing the rugged beauty of the Northwest Territories.
Under the direction of the Senior Journalist, Digital Media Journalists are responsible for creating written, audio and visual stories. These might come via assignments or through independent research.
Assignments might require driving to locations in the Yellowknife capital region and beyond. A drivers licence is required. CKLB provides a vehicle for staff use. Some assignments could require air travel on smaller aircraft throughout the North.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
- Create and document stories from various sources and features on all platforms with a focus on radio.
- Contribute ideas or program content; participate in the preparation of program objectives.
- Liaise with other staff, including Indigenous Language Announcers, to ensure required material or information is available.
- Perform production or routine administrative tasks associated with the smooth function of the newsroom and station.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
- Considerable knowledge of journalistic procedures and ethics.
- Demonstrated ability to report, write and produce quality in-person or phone interviews.
- Strong broadcast writing skills, deadline awareness, and on-air presence.
- Basic photography skills; good quality equipment is provided.
- The ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Knowledge of CRTC regulations and rules governing broadcast operations of radio stations.
- Must be fluent in English.
- Knowledge about the Dene, Inuit and Métis people and their cultures and languages would be an asset.
- Ability to use digital soundboards, editing software, audio and video software, and production facilities would be an asset.
- The ability to exercise professional news judgment
Education and Experience:
The position typically requires a university degree or equivalent with three years directly related experience that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.
