Highway between Hay River and High Level, Alberta reopens after fire

The highway linking Hay River to High Level Alberta has now reopened fully to traffic in both directions.

Northwest Territories Mackenzie Highway #1 and Alberta Highway 35 had been closed earlier this week due to wildfires near Steen River.

The fire crossed the highway in Alberta and also destroyed a railway bridge.

The Government of Alberta states that the highway and wildfire conditions are being closely monitored, and the highway may be closed without warning if conditions change or safe travel is no longer possible.

It adds that drivers are expected to exercise caution and discretion when travelling the route.

It also advises that the La Crete Ferry is closed due to wildfire activity in the area.
