Inuvik’s Mary Beckett to be acclaimed as New Democratic Party candidate for Northwest Territories

New Democrats from the Northwest Territories finally have a candidate for the upcoming federal election.

According to a news release from the NWT Federal NDP Electoral District Association, Inuvik resident Mary Beckett will be their candidate.

The NDP is the last of the main federal parties to announce their candidate for the Oct. 21 vote.

Beckett is active in business and the community and has lived and worked in Inuvik for 35 years helping people and small businesses in a wide variety of capacities, developing a deep connection with the community through professional and volunteer work, according to the release.

Beckett is described as a mother of four and grandmother of four.

She knows how the state of the economy and the high cost of living affects families in the North, the release states.

“Today is an exciting day as we get ready to kick start our Campaign,” said Shane Pike, President of the Northwest Territories Federal NDP Electoral District Association. “We are fortunate to have a candidate of Mary Beckett’s caliber carrying the NDP banner in the Federal Election.”

The release states that residents of the Northwest Territories can count on the NDP being a progressive choice in this election and is a part that works for people instead of the few at the top.

“The NDP has a bold plan to make everyday life more affordable and services more available for people in the Northwest Territories,” states the release.
