Foster Family Coalition hopes to raise FASD awareness with picnic

Learning about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is the easiest way to support someone living with it.

That’s according to Korry Garvey of the Foster Family Coalition of the NWT.

September 9 is FASD Awareness Day and the coalition hosted a public barbecue in Somba K’e park in Yellowknife to raise awareness. Nearly 50 people showed up to take in some sun and music.

Garvey says another important way to prevent FASD is to not shame mothers who are drinking when pregnant, and to offer to do activities with them that don’t involve alcohol.

She added that any women who would like some help can contact the coalition or the NWT help line, at 1-800-661-0844.
